The Kehlstainhaus or the Eagle's Nest is a historically 'loaded' place. And yet it was quite different in the past. Until Hitler turned his choice on this idyllic spot, the Obersalzberg was a quiet vacation spot where it was good living.
The Obersalzberg was surrounded by a barbed wire fence 2 m high. Located at the top of Kehlstein, it resembles a mountain lodge and is better known for Adlerhorst.
There Kehlsteinstraße gives you access to the mountain via five tunnels. The last climb has to be done by elevator.
After the war, the Eagle's Nest fell to the Americans. It became private property in 1960. It now houses a popular restaurant frequented by tourists, not only for its historical significance, but also the views of the snowcapped Alps.
