The telegraph was invented and patented by Charles Wheatstone and Fothergill Cook in 1837. Cooke and Wheatstone built a five-needle telegraph, and showed how this could work in September 1837. Cooke and Wheatstone demonstrated an electric telegraph in London between Euston railway station and Camden, about a mile away. You can follow approximately the path of the first telegraph messages along this walk. Pairs of needles pointed to each letter in turn and messages could easily be read without knowledge of a code. The demo took place on July 25 of 1837.
