De Hackesche Höfe is gebouwd in de 19de eeuw. Het is een vreemd geheel van negen met elkaar verbonden hofjes die worden omringd door oude, aristocratische gebouwen. Het idee voor het complex ontstond omstreeks 1896 bij de bekende architecten Kurt Berendt en August Endell, aanhangers van de Duitse Secession-stijl. In 1906 was hun meesterwerk gereed en het viel meteen in de smaak bij de Berlijnse bevolking. Vandaag de dag is de Hackesche Höfe nog steeds een gewilde plek bij zowel Berlijners als toeristen om in een van de vele café-restaurants (bvb Das Oxymoron)de lunch te gebruiken. Ook in de avonduren is het er een drukte van jewelste want het complex heeft zijn eigen theater, het Hackesche Hoftheater.
