Left bank was systematically raised at the end of the 19th century. The area around Sint-Anneke was one of the first areas where silt and coarse sand were brought in. A barren dune landscape emerged on the new substrate, which undoubtedly contributed to the development and success of the hospitality cluster with sandy beach. Important for the maintenance of the sandy landscape is the dynamics of the wind at the location of the protruding bend of the Scheldt. From Sint-Anneke, there is a beautiful view of the remnants of the Noordkasteel, on the other side of the Scheldt.
