Bure has its promenade des chapelles, but because there is more to see there is a variant here that passes 25 crosses, chapels and the churches of Bure and Grupont.
A shorter variant also exists: Past 20 Crosses, Chapels and the Church of Bure near Rochefort .
The walk consists of 2 loops. Start at the church of Bure. The interior is definitely worth a visit!
We start the ascent of the Côte du Croix Renkin and soon pass 2 old pumps (or fountains) at the Chapel ND de La Salette. We pass a Wrong Dear Lord and continue to the Croix Renkin, a monument commemorating the three soldiers killed in the explosion of their Jeep by a German shell.
We return and get a beautiful view of the region with the undulating landscape. We now descend and arrive at the river Lomme via a few field crosses and the railway. The Chapelle ND des Pauvres is a resting point in this quiet area. We descend further along a sunken road to Grupont. Before the railway bridge, we take the steep staircase on the right to the Eglise Saint-Denis.
Passing the Spanish house, where in 1618 the four Jamin sisters were burned at the stake for witchcraft, we arrive at the monument to the deminers of the Second World War. We cross the Lomme and follow the main road to the Faubourg roundabout with the 3 wild boars. We briefly avoid the N846 and return to Bure past the cemetery.
Back in the center we pass some places that remind us of the bloody battle in Bure during the Von Rundstedt offensive. Passing a few chapels, we arrive at the Croix Gloriette , which marks the beginning of the cavalry of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Along a stately avenue lined with trees, the seven chapels, each representing one of the seven sorrows, follow each other in quick succession before we reach the chapel of Our Lady of Haurt.
This small oratory from the 18th century also has its legend that a shepherd or a monk found a statue of the Virgin Mary and placed it in the church. But every time this happens, it is miraculously returned to its place on the hill of Haurt, making it a place of pilgrimage .
We return along the old road to the chapel, passing the old castle of Bure which has now become the college d'Alzon. This college also played an important role in the Second World War.
Be sure to also consult the information about the sights once you are there . They explain what you get to see!
