The Red Barracks is a former barracks in the Nauener Vorstadt in Potsdam. It was built between 1892 and 1895 and was expanded several times. It owes its name to the red bricks with which it was constructed. Large parts of the facility on Nedlitzer Street have been under monument protection since 1999.
The 2nd and 4th Guard Field Artillery Regiments of the Prussian Army, originally stationed in Potsdam, had been located at Berlin's Kupfergraben since 1773. However, due to the poor condition of the buildings there and space constraints, a new location had to be chosen in 1890. The choice fell on an undeveloped piece of land at the northern edge of Potsdam on Nedlitzer Street. From 1892, a new barracks for the two regiments was constructed there according to the plans of the garrison construction inspector and architect Robert Klingelhöffer. The move took place in several phases starting in 1893. By 1895, the construction work on what was then the largest and most modern barracks in Potsdam was completed. In 1913, another service residence building was erected at the junction of Fritz-von-der-Lancken and Nedlitzer Street.
