Wilmersdorf Forest Cemetery Stahnsdorf

The Wilmersdorf Forest Cemetery Stahnsdorf is located in the municipality of Stahnsdorf in the state of Brandenburg, but it is a state-owned cemetery of the state of Berlin, managed by the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf District Office. The size of the cemetery, in use since 1921, is 28.1 hectares. The cemetery is a registered monument of the state of Brandenburg.
Before the First World War, the then-independent municipality of Wilmersdorf acquired an area in immediate proximity to the Southwest Cemetery Stahnsdorf to establish a cemetery there. The decisive factor was the lack of space in the inner-city cemeteries and the good accessibility provided by the cemetery train that had been operating since 1913, which also offered the infrastructural possibilities for transporting the bodies. Even before the formation of Greater Berlin in 1920, Wilmersdorf announced a limited competition for the design. The following specification was made: “The layout must be simple and dignified, and the impression of a public park should be avoided. Attention must be paid to the proper division for the various types of burial sites, with a primary focus on ensuring that the pathways and layout are clear, simple, and functional to enable quick orientation.”
