The city walls of Staßfurt were built in the early phase of the city's fortress construction around 1450. They were about 5 km long, up to 6 m high and were built between 1427 and 1467. In 1583, around 945 inhabitants lived within the city limits, 150 years later the number fell to 935, but in 1736 there were already over 1,837 and in 1875 more than 11,000 inhabitants.
The Staßfurt city wall was built around the former settlement of Altstaßfurt between 1427 and 1467 after the granting of town and market rights in 1180, later it was reinforced by another parallel wall, creating a kennel in the space in between. With the exception of the north side, the city was completely surrounded by the outer and inner city walls, the north side, however, only by a moat; in addition, the wall was surrounded by roundels at the corners, the largest roundel in Golnowstraße has been preserved to this day; the defensive towers were built directly into the inner city wall. The city gates, Magdeburg Gate, Water Gate and Aschersleben Gate, were also protected by defensive towers. The town was protected from the north by the Bodelauf, in the east by strong fortifications, in the south by the extensive marshes and in the west by the heavily fortified castle.
