04 El Burgo de Osma - Atienza

This is stage 4 from El Burgo de Osma to Atienza (65km); it is the last stage that is part of the route section El Destierro (The Exile), the northernmost part of the 360 km Camino del Cid that runs from Vivar del Cid to Atienza.
Stage 4 is the most challenging so far. Until Gormaz, the terrain is almost flat, then the route climbs over more than 25km from about 900m to an altitude of 1380m. There are no facilities along the way, except for a small bar in Miedes.
After 17km, the castle of Gormaz (Fortaleza califal) is worth a visit. It dates back to the 10th century and was built by the Moors to defend their northern border. However, an additional 100m must be climbed to reach it.
Just before the castle, you will encounter the Ermita de San Miguel. The church, dating from the 11th century, houses some of the most beautiful pre-Romanesque murals in Spain. Special!
