Top stepper. On wild heights between Kautenbach and Goebelsmühle.

If you want to spend half a day and enjoy the wilderness of Luxembourg, you will surely find something to your liking on this hike. You hike up the high ridge along the Wiltz, but the river doesn't show up until the end as you approach the Goebelsmühle. The road is often a narrow path along steep edges, through old oak forests, but a wide panorama of the valley with its railway and wooded surroundings regularly unfolds over open sections. Not surprisingly, there is a bench at these viewpoints where you can rest for a while. The vegetation is diverse, ranging from dark and species-poor spruce forests to oak forests and light, rugged hornbeams with a lush layer of grass. The lover of the special flora will certainly get his money's worth here. Some rare plant species bloom on the quartz rocks of Hockslay . Halfway you can make a steep detour to a bog where gorse predominates. This is the result of a recent wildfire.
The heritage will not be much to be found on this trip. It is definitely worth entering the Kautenbach church and seeing the beautiful stained glass windows by Gustav Zanter in the otherwise modern interior.

Although the entrance and exit of the promenade is paved, most of it is unpaved. Only during a long period of rain can the road be muddy. The walk is quite easy to walk. There are some challenging climbs, but the biggest challenge we added halfway to the bog on one of the highest points of the ridge. This kilometer – from top to bottom – will be a calf bite for many.

This walk is based on the stop developed by the Luxembourg railways between the Kautenbach and Goebelsmühle stations. Public transport in Luxembourg has been completely free since 2020. Without a ticket, you can easily hop on the train or bus and travel all over the country.
