The Markiezaatsmeer is a part of the Oosterschelde that was closed off from the sea in 1984 as part of the Delta Works by a new dam, the Markiezaatskade. Behind the quay, the Markiezaatsmeer was created. The lake is part of what used to be described as the drowned land of the Marquisate of Bergen op Zoom. This area is located southwest of Bergen op Zoom and northwest of Woensdrecht.
Since its closure by the Markiezaatskade, it has developed into a freshwater marshland. Together with the former coastal areas, the Mattemburgh estate on the east side, the Molenplaat on the north side and the Hogerwaardpolder on the south side, it forms a contiguous nature reserve of 1,955 ha. Of that is about 1,000 ha. open water. The resulting nature reserve on the south bank is called the Marquisate.
