Rothem

Rothem is a village that is part of the municipality of Meerssen in the Dutch province of Limburg; it has about 1725 inhabitants.

The Rothem Terrace is named after Rothem. This is a river terrace formed by the Meuse during the Middle Pleistocene.
The Rothem Terrace is an old alluvial plain with the top of the river deposits at the height of Maastricht lying at about 81.5 meters above sea level. The river deposits are covered with younger deposits, usually consisting of loess.
Van den Berg and other researchers distinguish two terraces that differ in age, Rothem 1 and Rothem 2, which lie at 81.5 and 76 meters above sea level, respectively. The Rothem 2 terrace is the youngest of the two terraces and may date from the Holsteinien.
The lower part of the river deposits consists of a thick gravel layer, the bottom of which
is located in the vicinity of Maastricht at an average of 65 and 70 meters above sea level, respectively.
The bottom of this gravel layer often lies on much older deposits from the Tertiary or the Cretaceous. Most researchers consider the bottom of the gravel layer to be the actual terrace level.
