Old railway bridge over the Zuid-Willemsvaart

The Boxtel-Wesel railway line, also known as the German line (in Germany: Boxteler Bahn), is a former railway line of the North Brabant German Railway Company (NBDS). The line connected Wesel in Germany with Boxtel in the Netherlands via Goch, Gennep, Uden, Veghel and Schijndel.

In 1950, the NS terminated the last piece of passenger traffic on the Boxtel – Uden line. In 1978 the freight traffic between Uden and Mill also disappeared and in 1983 between Veghel and Uden, after which the tracks were dismantled.

Unfortunately, this old railway bridge was dismantled and removed in 2013. The railway bridge was a bottleneck for shipping, while no trains have been running over it for years. From the end of 2014, larger ships should be able to sail from the Maas to Veghel. To this end, a diversion will be dug near Den Bosch and the existing canal between Den Dungen and Veghel will be upgraded. There is no longer room in the wider waterway for a railway bridge from 1873.

From 2014 to 2021, the bridge could be admired on the Noordkade in Veghel. At the beginning of 2021, the bridge was rebuilt at a new location along the future Veghel-Uden fast cycle path. In this way, the piece of heritage is preserved and the presence of the German Line is also emphasized.
