Vincent van Gogh stayed in Drenthe for three months, but this is not very well known. The Van Gogh Drenthe Cycling Routes (which can be cycled as a single route of 150 kilometers) introduce you to the beautiful primeval landscape that inspired the artist. You cycle through playful fields with old village greens, forests, and marshy peat areas, where nature is allowed to take its course again. The theme comes to life even more through beautiful viewing panels and an engaging route booklet, filled with stories about Vincent and the time in which he lived.

The route features a remarkably high number of bike paths and is extremely varied. It never gets boring. For instance, you cycle a stretch along the canal between Hoogeveen and Nieuw-Amsterdam, which Vincent crossed by flatboat. But not for long; after a while, you dive back into the forest. Besides the Van Gogh sites, there are many other attractions, such as the nodding donkeys of Schoonebeek and the Veenloopcentrum Weiteveen. A nice addition is the recently reopened Van Gogh House Drenthe, where you can see Vincent's studio.
