Altan, dirigida por la familia Lefevre durante tres generaciones, es un curtidor artesanal. También puedes visitar la fábrica. Durante la visita guiada aprenderás todo sobre el proceso de producción y sobre las máquinas auténticas, algunas de las cuales tienen más de cien años.
En 1934, Adolphe Lefevre fundó la curtiduría Altan, cuyo nombre es una abreviatura de Adolphe Lefevre Tanneries. En 1945, trasladó su negocio a la ubicación actual, en la calle Looierij.
Altan trabaja principalmente para la industria del calzado: después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, por ejemplo, tiñe cuero que se importa de India. Más tarde, la empresa produce forros de zapatos a partir de pieles de perro importadas de Gran Bretaña. Esos fueron los días de gloria: los diez trabajadores procesan hasta 1200 pieles de perro a la semana.
Hoy en día, Altan sigue proporcionando pieles de cuero a particulares y empresas; la especialidad es el cuero de avestruz.
La empresa recibe con gusto grupos. Una visita guiada dura aproximadamente dos horas.
