Bergkirche

As Austria was at war and the Viennese capital occupied by Napoleon's troops, a rather simple burial for composer Joseph Haydn took place in the Hundsthurm churchyard in Gumpendorf, Vienna.

In 1820, Prince Esterhazy commanded to move the body to the church at Eisenstadt.

A memorial plaque points out that Joseph Haydn’s remains were transported to the Bergkirche in Eisenstadt on November 6, 1820 . Haydn’s skull was stolen a few days after his death – by one of his admirers. For about 60 years the head was stored in a cupboard in the Museum of the Vienna Academy of Music. His head was reunited with the rest of his body in 1954. This endend a 145 year long burial process. A final detail : the composer's skull was finally restored to the remainder of his skeleton, the substitute skull was not removed. Thus Haydn's tomb now contains two skulls.
