Did you know that many countries have a national flower? Belgium's is the poppy.
Of course, there is a link between this flower and World War I, which raged here so fiercely.
The fact that poppies appear in war zones is not coincidental. Just think of the famous poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae. The Canadian wrote it in 1915 while he was working as a doctor on the Ypres battlefields. McCrae noticed that many poppies bloomed in places where soldiers had fallen. And there is a soil and biological explanation for that. The structure of the ground is completely destroyed and disturbed by the grenades and bombs. Many seeds that had been in the soil for years surfaced as a result. The poppy is a pioneer plant: it will be the first to raise its head in poor soil, while other plants still struggle.
