Wezemaal

Wezemaal is a part of the Belgian municipality of Rotselaar in the province of Flemish Brabant, located in the Hageland region. Wezemaal was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977. Wezemaal was first mentioned in 1044, when the Saint Bartholomew Chapter of Liège, under Bishop Wazo, acquired part of the rights to the church of Wezemaal. The Liège canons retained part of the patronage rights until 1232, when they transferred their share to the Abbey of Averbode. Shortly before, Arnold II, lord of Wezemaal, had gifted the church of Wezemaal along with his share of the patronage rights and the tithes to the same abbey. The transfer to Averbode meant that the abbey would appoint no fewer than four priests in the parish: three for the ministry of the church, and one for the chapel of the lords of Wezemaal. Later, this number would be limited to three, or even fewer, during periods when the abbey itself faced difficulties.
