On the other side of the Nete you will see 2 constructions. The left-hand construction is the non-return valve at the point where the Schollebeek flows into the Nete. At high tide, this valve prevents the water from the Nete from flowing into the Schollebeek. The Schollebeek is one of the many non-navigable watercourses maintained by the province. The other construction is the connection to Aquafin's water purification basin.
On the right you will see a field. This polder is allowed to flood when heavy precipitation no longer finds a way out in the nearby rivers and canals. The overflow dike was also lowered for this reason. This prevents water damage from occurring elsewhere. As part of the Sigma Plan - a project of the Flemish government that aims to reduce the risk of flooding around the Scheldt and its tributaries - this polder will be set up as a wetland. A beautiful reed landscape would then be created there. At the moment, the polder is still used by farmers.
