Here's the legend:
"A poor woman from Koudertaverent went to the Jewish Lombards to pawn her only decent garment. They promised her many gels in exchange for the Holy Host that she would receive at Easter. The little woman agreed and hid the host after the Easter communion. On the way to the Lombards, she regretted it and hid the host in a dry alder bush. At that moment, the shrub revived and began to bloom. Perlgrims came from all over to see this miracle. The owner of the field was angry because his fruits were being trampled. After a while, he had had enough of the crowds and cut down the bush. At that moment, another miracle happened: the chips fell in the shape of a cross, covered with a drop of blood. The farmer stopped chopping and the priest was called in. The woman confessed her mistake and the host was taken from the bush and taken in procession to St. Martin's Church."
The legend of the Holy Crosses is linked to the Kruisborre Chapel and to the procession. In the current context, the legend of the Holy Crosses is no longer politically correct, to say the least. The legend has an anti-Semitic basis. But that too is a part of the cultural heritage that we learn to deal with rather than gloss over.
