Peter the Great has a statue in the Brussels Warande Park that commemorates his remarkable visit in 1717. During a party, he drank so much wine that he had to throw up in a fountain, which the people of Brussels immortalized with a playful text on the fountain basin.
The statue itself was donated in 1854 by the Russian Prince Antoli Demitov as a reminder of this historic visit.
The text on the original fountain reads: "Peter Alexiowitz, Tsar of Moscow, Grand Duke, seated at the edge of this fountain, has enriched the waters with the wine he drank, on 16 April 1717, at three o'clock in the afternoon". Although the Tsar was known for his modernisation ambitions, he is remembered in Brussels for his exuberant drinking habits.
