The girl (van Afsnee) also known as 'The girl at the ferry' is a work by sculptor Edward Vandaele.
The fragile statue was unveiled at the end of October 2006 by the then Alderman for Culture Sas Van Rouveroij in the context of the Ghent cultural platforms.
In mid-November 2008, the bronze statue of almost 1m was stolen.
Edward Vandaele prefers the embodiment of the human figure in his bronze sculptures. The figures are often depicted with elongated limbs and fall prey to vulnerability, helplessness and threat. They are, as it were, in an unstable state. At any moment they threaten to lose their balance and are often burdened with tragedy. According to Vandaele, tragedy and beauty do not have to be mutually exclusive. These are two properties that give a composition strength.
