The nature reserve Hoge Bergen – Ekstergoor (170ha) was created in 2006 by the Flemish Region, and managed by the Agency for Nature and Forest.

Although Eksterheide is already home to important natural values such as hawk, black woodpecker, tree lark, curlew, hedge frog, field cricket and variegated skipper, the ecological value of the nature reserve will increase considerably in the coming years through targeted interventions. For example, the possibilities for restoring open land dunes and (dry and moist) heathland will be examined, and the softwood will gradually be transformed into hardwood. Some major works have already been carried out in 2009: the centrally located airport was demolished and made way for the historic Ekstergoor (a wet depression), and new land dunes were created on the higher parts. The main forest roads have been reconstructed, three viewing huts have been set up and boardwalks have been built on the wettest parts of the walking routes. The Zwaaikom entrance is equipped with an access bridge.
