The Evangelical Lutheran Maria Magdalena Church is located in Fulkum, a place in the municipality of Holtgast, which is part of the East Frisian collective municipality of Esens. The church was consecrated in 1862.
On the artificially created church mound, there were documented three predecessor buildings made of wood. These date back to the 12th century. During this time, the eastern half of today's church mound was raised as a sand hill about 2.5 meters high. This served as the construction platform for the first church, which was later destroyed by fire. The subsequent building was also made of wood. It had a width of about 4 meters and also fell victim to the flames. In the later 12th century, the church mound was raised and built with a new wooden church.
