The Neuwerk Monastery was a foundation of the Augustinian Canons, established in 1116 in Halle an der Saale. The monastery buildings are no longer preserved today; individual building elements were reused in the New Residence.
In 1116, Archbishop Adelgotus, with the help of the citizens of Halle, began the construction of the Neuwerk Monastery, north of the city walls of Halle. According to legend, the choice of the building site was made through the vision of a wealthy citizen who saw a blazing plowshare ascending to the sky at this location. On July 5, 1121, Count Rogerus of Veltheim issued the official founding privilege and constituted the monastery as the spiritual center of Halle, to which the parish churches and spiritual jurisdiction were subject. The monastery was granted the right to maintain a school, making it the first institution in Halle to receive this privilege. At the latest, after the transfer of the relics of Saint Alexander in 1124, the church was consecrated to it.
