The grammar school was founded in 1969. Under the slogan of the educational catastrophe, there has been intensive advertising for attending the grammar school since the mid-1960s.
With the help of a foundation, a "modern language, mathematics and science grammar school for boys and girls" was founded. After a short time, the city of Kreuztal, which was still young at the time, took over this private foundation school and left it with the name Friedrich-Flick-Gymnasium "out of gratitude to the founder and honorary citizen".
