The Königsberg Castle was built on a peak above the district of Königsberg in the municipality of Biebertal in the Gießen district of Hesse in the mid-13th century by the Counts of Solms.
The origins of the summit castle likely date back to around 1240/50, when the County of Solms was divided into the territories of Solms-Königsberg, Solms-Burgsolms, and Solms-Braunfels. The builder was probably Count Marquard of Solms, who needed a castle of his own to manage his territory and as a residence, as he was the ancestor of the Solms-Königsberg line. However, it is also conceivable that the castle already existed beforehand and was simply assigned to Marquard during the division. Marquard's son, Reimbold I of Solms, was the first to call himself Count of Cunigesberg after his residence at Königsberg Castle in 1257.
