The pilgrimage church in Wassenberg, just over the border near Roermond, is indispensable during a visit to this small town. Just over the border, a short trip of about fifteen kilometers from Roermond, lies the small German town of Wassenburg.
This town is the gateway to the Meinweg National Park. Wassenburg has a tumultuous history, with the castle as its red thread, the foundation of which has stood for more than a millennium.
The recognizable Bergfried, the watchtower of the old castle, is essential when you are in Wassenberg – it offers a captivating view of the historic center.
Also indispensable is the pilgrimage church of St. Mary’s Assumption, a pillar basilica with two side aisles, built around 1196 as a monastery church for Cistercian nuns.
After the departure of the nuns, the church increasingly developed as a place of pilgrimage. Inside the church are the grace statue of an early Gothic Madonna from 1350, a remarkable pulpit, and a stunning crucifix.
The pilgrimage church is one of the religious jewels in the Roerdal.
