"A glance at the map makes it clear why this hiking trail in the Eifel is called "Devil's Eight": The route resembles a figure eight and its namesake, the Devil's Gorge, is also the first highlight of the hiking adventure. From now on, the path leads through a fascinating rock world. Narrow paths lead past mighty rock towers and wildly scattered blocks full of ravines, crevices and mysterious weathering.

They stand majestically as if they had never done anything else: the huge rocks of the Devil's Gorge. But they tell a dramatic story. Towards the end of the last ice age - about 12,000 years ago - the alternation of frost and thaw led to enormous rock falls on the edge of the Ferschweiler Plateau. A huge crash must have taken place when a large block of sandstone fell from the wall of the plateau and opened the deep, narrow crevasse through which we can walk today: the Devil's Gorge.

The Path of the Devilish Eight is like an adventure, a journey into a bygone era. The rocks tell this story in their own way. They rise high into the sky and invite you to look up and let yourself be touched by its majesty or discover it while climbing, as children like to do.

At a certain point on the way down to the valley, you can hear water flowing: the rapids of the Prüm, called "Irreler Waterfalls", were formed at the end of the last ice age by falling rocks, which formed a natural dam. From the waterfalls, the route leads along the Hälbach up to the edge of the plateau and again through adventurous rock panoramas. In the old millstone quarries near the characteristic rock gate, the circular traces of the chisels are clearly visible, testifying to the work of the stonemasons. From here it goes past the VIA point back to the high plateau and back to the nature park centre.

Tip:
After so much adventure, you can take a break at the Devil's Gorge Nature Park Centre and take a deep breath with an ice cream or lunch. If you like, you can embark on the following journey of discovery through the eventful history of the earth: The Devil's Gorge Dinosaur Park with its life-size replicas of long-extinct animals fascinates not only young visitors.

At the Irrel waterfalls, it is worth taking a detour to the new suspension bridge over the Prüm. (available from 30 September 2023) For the first time since the flood disaster in 2021, you can cross the Prüm here again. And it's even barrier-free!"
