Experience Route South

The southern corridor extends from the Inner Cologne Green Belt to about Hersel in the north of Bonn. This corridor is also strongly influenced by the gravel deposits of the old Rhine that occur underground, which are mined between the landscape axis of Meschenich and Wesseling-Keldenich. The resulting landscapes of gravel extraction are now nature reserves and recreational areas.

In the vicinity of Bornheim, the fertile soils of the Middle Rhine Terrace did not allow for the exploitation of the gravel deposits. Here, a garden and vegetable farming landscape has developed to this day, which was named ''Rhenish Gardens'' for the corridor. Depending on the season, cyclists can ride through a very colorful landscape. However, the extensive parks and gardens of the Augustusburg Baroque Palace in Brühl, which still stands as a masterpiece of the Rococo style and is one of the most significant buildings of this style in Germany, live up to this name, as do the Cologne Volksgarten and the Fritz-Encke Volkspark, which are part of the Outer Cologne Green Belt, at the beginning and the Bonn Hofgarten as well as the Botanical Garden at the end of the cycling route.
