The landscape along the route is varied: slightly hilly, often the path leads through meadows and farmland and past farms, and several times the path goes through wooded areas. In total, there are eight notable climbs along the route, with height differences varying between 20 and 40 meters.
The route begins at the parking lot at the Herungerberg Velodrome in Venlo.
The path (counter-clockwise) runs along the Groote Heide, the glider airfield, and then into Germany past Krickenbeck Castle and along the two adjacent lakes (note: in good weather, many hikers may be on the combined foot/cycle path). The Hinsbeck Heights are literally deserted for a while.
Via the asphalted bike path along a former railway line, you head towards the Süchtelner Heights, the hilly region around the town of Süchteln. Here you have three climbs to choose from (all with a max. gradient of 9%). Then you continue onto the Hinsbeck Heights. A descent of 6% leads you to Hinsbeck and then follows the ascent of the Oberstraße with a maximum gradient of 10%. You then pass through the Nette valley and through the forest area of Wankumer Heide towards Herongen.
North of Herongen there are also some hills, but these are not visited on this route. Instead, the route goes along agricultural paths south of Herongen, passing the remains of an unfinished lock in the Nordkanal, back into Dutch territory. When you arrive in the Netherlands, you descend the steep edge in eastern Venlo, and a little further you ascend the steep edge (max. 8% gradient).
Characteristic of this route are the many paved roads that are closed to motor vehicle traffic (except for agricultural vehicles), these roads are called agricultural pathways in Germany. The roads on this route are often in good condition. In Viersen (after climbing the Benzenberg), you follow a tiled bike path on the left side of the road, which also slopes steeply downwards, and below you need to turn left. Just below Herongen, you follow an agricultural path that has a bumpy asphalt surface in the coniferous forest due to tree roots. The same goes for a section of agricultural path near Wankumer Heide. Through roads are avoided as much as possible but therefore crossed more frequently (which means sometimes having to be very careful when crossing). All in all, this means that this route is less suitable for large groups.
