The Provincial Archaeological Museum of Seville was founded in 1879 . Since 1946, it has been housed in the Pavilion of Fine Arts of the Ibero-American Exhibition of 1929, in the Plaza de América in the María Luisa Park.
The Pavilion of Aníbal González is inspired by the Monterrey Palace in Salamanca , built by the architect Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón in the 16th century. Thanks to its neo-Renaissance style, it was also called a Renaissance palace.
The museum offers the opportunity to learn about the history of Seville, from prehistory to modern times.
The building is divided into three levels that are visited in chronological order . The cellar covers the oldest period and shows ceramic, stone and copper elements from the societies that inhabited the area during prehistoric times .
The first floor houses one of the museum's most important pieces (it's a replica), the Carambolo Treasure , a mysterious set of gold and ceramic pieces over 2,700 years old.
The last part of the route includes numerous Roman remains , the vast majority of which come from Itálica , including some sculptures, mosaics and ceramic elements that stand out.
