The Istrian peninsula is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. The peninsula is located in the north of the Adriatic Sea, between the Gulf of Trieste and the Kvarner. The peninsula is shared by Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. The largest part belongs to Croatia, mainly to Istria County (Croatian: Istarska županija, Italian: Regione istriana) and to a small extent to Primorje-Gorski Kota County (Croatian: Primorsko-goranska županija). A small part in the north of Istria belongs to the Slovenian region of Primorska. Here are the coastal towns and port cities of Izola (Isola), Piran (Pirano), Portorož (Portorosa), Ankaran (Ancarano) and Koper (Capodistria), of which Koper is the only commercial port. The municipality of Muggia (Slovene: Milje) forms the Italian part of Istria. Istria traditionally attracts many tourists. Famous people such as Dante, Jules Verne, James Joyce and Robert Koch visited the area.
