Built between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, this Basilica of St. Dominic in Siena was created at the initiative of the Catholic mendicant order of the Dominicans. They started in the year 1226 with the construction of this large Gothic church building that stands on top of the Camporegio hill.
The building, inspired by the shape of an Egyptian cross, was extended in the fourteenth century with a large bell tower. The centuries-old basilica has been almost completely destroyed on two occasions. A great fire in 1532 and a major earthquake in 1798 were to blame. In both cases, the basilica was restored.
You can visit this church for free, but taking pictures is not allowed.
Art lovers will also get their money's worth here. In the Basilica of St. Dominic you can find a number of works by Italian artists such as Sano di Pietro, Sodoma and Ventura Salimbeni.
