The gate is believed to have been built between the 11th and 14th centuries . The structure is located between two bastions that were placed to defend the old city.
It represented the main entrance door to the village. The name is derived from its location in the west towards the city of Trapani.
Connected to the ancient wall dating back to the Punic Elymian period. It is one of three entrance gates still present , there are two more along the original wall perimeter: Porta Spada and Porta Carmine. Then there is a fourth gate , which has recently come to light: it is Porta Castellammare, of which very little remains today. However, originally there were five gates. The fifth gate , which no longer exists today, was demolished in 1811 during the construction of the road connecting the city center of Erice with the city of Trapani.
