The Kromme Rijnpad is perhaps the most beautiful walking route in Utrecht. This varied walking tour between Utrecht and Wijk bij Duurstede follows the course of the Kromme Rijn and partly leads on an old towpath. The route is a total of 29 km long, but can be divided into several stages. Along the way, enjoy wide variety of flora and fauna, stately estates and orchards, and discover parts of the Roman Limes and the New Dutch Water Line.
The Kromme Rijn has probably been flowing through the Utrecht landscape for about 3000 years. It was a wide river, at least as wide as the Lek, and flowed from Wijk bij Duurstede to Utrecht, just like now. Over time, the river has left a clear mark on the development of landscape, villages and towns. The Kromme Rijn was originally called Oude Rijn, but around 1500, because of the many bends, it soon became popularly called the Kromme Rijn. The river has always shifted its course. Deposition of sludge created fertile soils, which were used for arable farming and fruit cultivation. Slowly but surely, the Kromme Rijn area grew into a varied and varied landscape, which is now of great cultural-historical value.
