The route starts in Wanssum and goes clockwise. First, you cycle through the floodplains of the western Maas bank between Vierlingsbeek and Boxmeer, sometimes on narrower, free-standing bike paths, occasionally lined with woven hedges (the Maasheggen area). Between Vierlingsbeek and Groeningen, you briefly follow the main road to cycle back towards the Maas via quiet roads, passing an old river dune near Vortum. You cycle along the sluice complex of Sambeek and then towards Boxmeer and Beugen.
In Beugen, you take the bike path on the Maasdijk: it's only here that you really see dikes in the landscape. After that, you cycle through the nature reserve De Vilt, an old arm of the Maas. Next, you cycle through the beautiful surroundings of Sint Agatha, past the large monastery in this village, and then via Oeffelt, you cross the Maas to Gennep. Gennep has a beautiful historic center, but on this route, you quickly pass through the edge of Gennep via quiet roads in a suburb. You cycle via Ottersum to the Reichswald: a large forest area southwest of Kleve in Germany. First, you climb the Sint-Jansberg, then cycle through the Reichswald via the German town of Grafwegen on two roads closed to motor traffic: the 6 km straight but winding Kartenspielerweg and the Dickmönchstalweg. Between these two roads, you can only follow a good bike path along the main road for a length of 2.5 km. After this bike path, it can be a bit bumpy on rural roads to the Dickmönchstalweg (bumpy but otherwise good asphalt). After you have taken the Dickmönchstalweg, you descend a steep edge via a bike path along the main road. Be careful: at the bottom of the descent, you must quickly turn left, but keep the bike path just on, and the main road is fairly busy. So pay attention!
Afterward, you go via Asperden on rural roads through the catchment area of the Kendel river back to the Netherlands. You then cycle through the Maasduinen in the northern part, only to end up on the busy N271. You currently cannot cross it via the Lankerseweg (temporary road closure for a few months), so you have to cross the N271 via a bike path about a kilometer further north. But then again it’s quiet roads through the floodplains of the Maas. At Aijen, you leave the floodplains and cycle through forested area and along the Leukermeer to Well. Past Well, you cross the N271 twice to climb a bit towards the hamlet Knikkerdorp. After that, you come back to the Maas to cross it via the Koninginnebrug to the endpoint Wanssum. The detour via Knikkerdorp can easily be removed from the route by not turning left towards the castle in the old part of Well, but going straight ahead to take the Koninginnebrug.
