The Avenida Visconde Guedes Teixeira is the main thoroughfare of the city, which starts at Largo de Camões (in front of the old Episcopal Palace and the Cathedral ) and ends at the foot of the steps of the Remédios Sanctuary.
It is a large paved avenue, divided in the central part by a beautifully landscaped promenade. It runs through a forest, with lawns with flowers and small fences that form geometric designs, several ornamental fountains (the Cochicho fountain stands out) and benches to sit on.
At the intersection with Avenida 5 de Outubro there is a roundabout where the Monument to the Unknown Soldier stands.
