This is one of the five remaining chapels of the seven that were once built.
In the first decades of the 18th century, the Via Crucis ceremonies in Guimarães, during Lent, were already organized by the Irmandade da Consolação and Santos Passos.
For this purpose, crosses were distributed in different parts of the city and the representation of the different steps of the Passion of Christ was done by a figure from Braga, on a rental basis. In 1726, the Brotherhood began to erect a granite Way of the Cross in different parts of the city, consisting of seven small chapels, filled with life-size figures in painted wood.
Originally there were seven, built in 1727, but today there are five left : in Largo do Carmo, Rua de Santa Maria, Largo João Franco, Senhora da Guia (opposite the Alberto Sampaio Museum) and Largo da República do Brazil or Campo de Feira.
