The Vatican (pronounced /ˈvætɪkən/) is a city-state enclaved within the city of Rome. It is one of the European microstates. It has an area of 0.439 km² and a population of approximately 900 inhabitants, of which around 450 people enjoy the right of Vatican citizenship, while the rest are authorized to reside in the country but without citizenship rights. Almost half of the citizens live outside the territory ceded by Italy in other countries for work reasons, and it is a hybrid in which it is an independent city entity that is referred to as a State by the community. It is so small that St. Peter's Basilica alone accounts for 7% of the total area; the basilica and St. Peter's Square occupy 20% of the territory, making it the most urbanized "independent" territory in the world. Its name comes from Vatican Hill. It was created by the Italian fascists in 1929 through the Lateran Treaties celebrated between the Holy See and the then Kingdom of Italy.
