Oudenaarde is located just south of Ghent. In the past, the city was known throughout Europe for its tapestry production, an industry that flourished in the sixteenth century, but continued until the eighteenth century. Today, the city is sometimes called the pearl of the Flemish Ardennes.
Oudenaarde is first and foremost famous for its town hall, which is known as a textbook example of Brabant late Gothic.
The Gothic St. Walburga's Church was rebuilt around the year 1150 after an earlier church was partially destroyed in a fire in 1126.
The city also has four bridges over the Scheldt. The most remarkable of these is the Ohio Bridge in Nederename.
In the borough of Ename, archaeologists have discovered the foundations of an eleventh-century castle, a trading settlement and a Benedictine abbey.
