The Park Drie Fonteinen has always been an ideal walking place for both Vilvoorden residents and people from the wider area.
The park owes its name to a fountain that was erected after the construction of the Brussels-Rupelmonde canal in 1561 to provide drinking water for the skippers. This fountain included a water basin fed with springs and a fountain with 4 water jets. Because the skippers could only see 3 of the 4 rays when approaching the fountain, the domain was called the "Three Fountains" by them.
The origin of the park itself can be situated much later, more specifically at the end of the 18th century. Jan Walckiers van Galmaarden, a Brussels banker, bought a large number of properties here. On one of his properties he built a castle, which was bombed during the Second World War.
When the park was purchased by the city of Vilvoorde in 1956, it was already a beautifully landscaped park, approximately 50 hectares in size, with the beauty of an English landscape garden.
