Zoutleeuw is located in the Hageland.
The meaning of salt has never been adequately explained. For a long time, Zoutleeuw was the furthest inland port city, where salt was imported. Zoutleeuw is located on the river Kleine Gete.
Some sights are:
The St. Leonard's Church on the Grote Markt, about the only church in Belgium with an intact late Gothic interior. This church with its towers has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
The Town Hall, built by Rombout Keldermans II from 1529.
The Meat House of Zoutleeuw, wrongly called the Cloth Hall. The Vleeshuis already existed in the 13th century. In the Vleeshuis there were meat banks, which were hereditary. Like real estate, they were described with deer mates.
The Cloth House, rarely called Cloth Hall in the archive, bordered the Spiegel.
The Bethania Barn, the only remnant of the monastery of BethaniÙn or Saint Mary Magdalene. This monastery of the regular canonesses of St. Augustine was founded in 1478. I
The Red Lion, former inn next to the Town Hall.
De Spiegel, at Grote Markt 23, wrongly called Spiegelhuis. The date of construction is unknown. Old postcards indicate 1471.
