We walk along the Scheldedijk to the nature reserve Groot Schoor, where we look out over trucks, tractors, and bulldozers moving back and forth. “Around the Groot Schoor, the Flemish government is constructing a Scheldedijk that is strong enough to hold back the water during storm tides. There will be a towpath on it, where you will be able to walk and cycle. The existing dike along the Schelde will be lowered. Through a breach in the dike and a channel, the river water will be guided properly. By exposing the Groot Schoor to ebb and flow, freshwater mudflats and salt marshes will emerge here. Ideal living spaces for birds.”
The Scheldedijk towards the beautiful and famous Paviljoen de Notelaer is partially interrupted due to the works. Anyone wishing to take a look can walk through the earth path behind Groot Schoor and follow the Scheldedijk (a detour of +/- 4 kilometers). The pavilion, built in the late 18th century by the dukes of d’Ursel, once served as a belvedere and in the 1970s as an artist's residence of Vic Gentils.
