The Caterpillar by Wim Delvoye has been on the Middelkerke seawall since 2003. However, the specimen currently on display is not the original. That original piece was relocated that same year to Ground Zero in New York. The current Caterpillar has been there since 2004 and received a spectacular extension in May 2019 with the accompanying Flatbed Trailer. Together they create a new, impressive artwork measuring 21 meters in length. Caterpillar + Flatbed Trailer is part of Delvoye's Caterpillar series from 2002. With this collection of remarkable construction machines, he forges a timeless melting point between the past and the present. In this work, the tracked vehicle symbolizes the modern age, while the decorative patterns of a Gothic church represent the medieval world.
