For centuries, there was a church building on this site that grew into a pilgrimage site around the miraculous statue of Mary that washed ashore in 1596. It was one of the oldest pilgrimage churches in the region.
Shortly before World War I, there were already thoughts of replacing the dilapidated church. During the war, the church was completely destroyed.
In 1919, a temporary church was first erected, and then the Ostend architect duo Charles Pil and Henri Carbon designed the plans for a new neo-Romanesque church building, which was completed in 1923.
The small church with the statue of Mary is still a place of pilgrimage for fishermen from the area. The stained glass windows depict many miracles attributed to the miraculous statue.
