The Powder Tower at Lingen was part of Lingen Castle, which was demolished during the Spanish-Dutch War with the withdrawal of the Spaniards in 1630. It was rebuilt elsewhere from 1960 onwards.
The construction of Lingen Castle began at the beginning of the 13th century by the Counts of Tecklenburg. The construction of the Powder Tower can probably be dated to the beginning of the 15th century. After completion, the tower stood within the castle, which was once again specially secured. As was customary at the time, it was used to store gunpowder for the defense of the city. In 1607, a fire broke out within the fortress walls, which did not spare the Powder Tower. The cause was probably an unextinguished fire in the castle, which was usually used to heat or illuminate the rooms at that time. As a result, a powerful explosion occurred, which claimed many lives and also took large parts of the fortress with it. The Lingen fortifications had their greatest expansion before the demolition of the fortress before the withdrawal of the Spaniards in 1630.
