Angermund Castle, also known as Kellnerei or Old Kellnerei, is a moated castle on the Angerbach in the Düsseldorf district of Angermund. It is located south of the historic town center and is one of the most significant architectural monuments in Düsseldorf.
The Archbishop of Cologne, Philipp of Heinsberg, purchased a castle in the second half of the 12th century, which a successor, Engelbert I of Cologne, granted as a fief to his brother Adolf III of Berg. His family, the Counts of Berg, used the facility – with a brief interruption in the 15th century – continuously as a state castle and as one of the northernmost border posts of their territory until the beginning of the 19th century. After the dissolution of the Duchy of Berg in 1806, it was primarily used for agricultural purposes. When this use was abandoned in the 1970s, the castle faced the threat of decay. From 1982 to 1985, it was then converted into a modern residential complex. Since September 21, 1999, it has been protected as an archaeological monument, and since February 23, 1984, it has additionally been listed as a historical monument. It is currently privately inhabited and cannot be visited.
