The 47 km long circular tour starts in the monastery town of Ebstorf and leads to Linden. Just a few more pedal strokes and you reach Verhorn with the oil and grain mill from 1344. A versatile mill, which also powered the agitator of a bakery as well as a shredder and threshing machine. Visits by appointment: G. Wiechmann, Tel. 05808-337. You cycle past Groß Süstedt, through Bargfeld and Bahnsen to Suderburg - a modern university location in the traditional heath village. Here, legendary stories are told: of the foreign minstrel who succumbed to his own evil magic or of flying bells that crashed down and formed the bell pit. Suderburg also represents progress: its trickle fields show the development of modern irrigation from the 19th century. For a break, the bicycle church St. Remigius with its 1000-year-old tower is recommended. The bicycle church is reliably open during the day in summer and offers space for breaks, drinking water, as well as information about the place and cycling. The tour continues to Holxen with the water mill from 1321. At that time, it was used as a grain, grits, and bake mill. The present museum mill is fully functional. Visitors have free access to the water wheel and the weir. Visits by appointment, A. Cohrs, Tel. 05826-14 12. Through Klein Süstedt, Hansen, and the "Gold Village" Bohlsen, the bike tour leads to Barnsen. At the airfield, you can relax and watch the flight operations with coffee and cake. You can even fly in the airplane yourself! During operating hours, simply approach the flight controller in the tower. From the airfield to the garden - in Melzingen, the tour's namesake highlight awaits: the Arboretum, a life's work by Christa von Winning. After the war, she was allocated the land, which she cultivated to feed her family. Later, Christa Winning undertook numerous garden trips and brought back seeds from everywhere. Today, 800 different plants from all over the world thrive here. A walk with a break in the garden café puts the finishing touch on the bike tour. The last stage leads through the Bobenwald back to Ebstorf. If you haven't visited the medieval monastery before the bike tour, you might want to do it now. The sacral art treasures and the faithful copy of the Ebstorf World Map from the 13th century are worth seeing. (Tel. 05822-2304)
