Small Emajõgi, one of the largest rivers in Souther-Estonia, is in its full length located on the territory of Valga County. It starts from Lake Pühajärve and flows into Lake Võrtsjärve, making it 84 km long with a catchment basin of 1364 square kilometres, largest affluent Pedeli River. Its source lake is big and low, with a surface area of 487,5 ha, average depth 1,3 m. River’s estuary is 34 meters. The river drops 81 meters or 0,98 meters per kilometer.
Slow river – very good for beginners.
During the high water in spring, you can start your trip from Restu watermill.
During the low water season, in summer, you should start from the headwaters, at the earliest from Sangaste-Antsla bridge.
Until Sooru bridge , the river remains narrow, from there it will become wider and is great for kayaking.
From Hummuli to Lake Võrtsjärve, the river is also suitable for bigger boats.
